Are you interested in a healthy lifestyle? Are you curious about veganism? What does it mean to be vegan at all? And what is it that you can’t eat on a vegan diet?

These are the questions you are thinking about recently, right? Well, I am here to answer and help you.

The story of veganism in brief

In 1944 the British Donald Watson and Elsie Shrigley founded the Vegan Society from a vegetarian group. They defined the term vegan: a vegetarian, who doesn’t eat butter, egg, cheese or milk.

Later the Society extended the term because they thought, it is not just about eating animals but exploiting them. So a true vegan believes that no one should exploit any animal, including killing them, eating them, testing on them or even locking them into cages (as they do in zoos).

Are you someone who loves animals? Do you care about them? Are you still eating them or drinking their milk?

Even if you don’t care about animals, you should care about yourself and your health. Because consuming animal products is not just immoral, but also harmful to you. I will tell you about that in another post.

If you decided to go vegan or you just want to know what vegans can’t eat, read the article.

What you can’t eat on a Vegan Diet

So do you know who is a vegetarian? Probably, right? Being vegan is more than that.

Meat, Fish and Poultry

So a vegetarian doesn’t eat meat, vegans either. So if you want to be vegan, you should give up on meat.

That includes fresh meat like chicken breast, beef, pork, fish or processed meat like bacon, sausage, salami, ham, canned tuna and everything that contains meat.

Yes, forget scrambled eggs (but not forever, because you can make the vegan version), omelettes, ham&eggs, caviar, shrimp, lobster, mussel and so on.

Milk and dairy products

Did you know that almost 70% of the world’s population is affected by lactose intolerance? The percentage is higher amongst Asian (90%) or African-American (75%) people. In my family, my mum and I are lactose intolerant (it means, we can’t consume milk and we feel bad if we try), my father and sister might be too. Also my boyfriend and his sister.

Probably you are lactose intolerant too. Have you ever experienced the following symptoms after consuming milk or dairy products?

  • Stomach pain and bloating,
  • diarrhea,
  • increased gas,
  • constipation,
  • other symptoms like headaches, fatigue, loss of concentration, muscle and joint pain, mouth ulcers, problems urinating, eczema.

If yes, you should stop consuming dairy products. Even if you are not allergic to milk, you should avoid it. Read my article for more information about milk.

What you can’t eat on a vegan diet: milk, cheese, yoghurt, kefir, sour cream, ice cream (that is made from milk), milk chocolate, and everything that contains milk or dairy. Always check the labels!

Do you know what will happen to them after they are born?

Honey and gelatine

If you want to be truly vegan, you can’t eat honey on a vegan diet. Even it is not made from animals, it is made using bees. And that is exploitation!

Another important fact, do you know what are gummy bears made from? Or the jelly on your cake? Usually, they contain gelatine, which is made from the skins of pigs and cows or from demineralized animal bones. Sounds disgusting, right?

So these were the things that you can’t eat on a vegan diet. I know it sounds a little bit scary, and you probably think that ‘what will I eat now?‘. But don’t worry, there are still a lot of things you can eat! For example vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds, mushrooms.

Next time I will share with you amazing meal ideas that you CAN eat as a vegan. 🙂

    Hello Suzie!

I’ve undergone such an adventurous and stressful life. From fighting for my country as a marine to being locked up in state prison. I believe that a healthy gut and positive mindset can change your stars. Recently due to the corona virus and I guess a mid life crisis I have lost my way. I’ve had suicidal thoughts and depression related to PTSD/Not being able to pay my bills and losing everything. Moral of the story is we can’t focus on things that we can’t control. But we can focus on what we can. I don’t want to take anymore prescription medications and I’ve chosen to give up on Christianity and go back to believing in Dharma (Good Karma). My problem is that I’ve taken drugs in the past and have depleted my brains natural production of Seratonin which makes me have violent and suicidal mood swings. Is there anyway you can recommend a diet or some specific vegan foods that promote the production of Seratonin? I’ve never eaten healthy or dieted. And I think going full vegan is a great step to help me live a selfless life and move in the right direction as to learning to leave the world in a better position than I came in. Thank you for your time. – Matt
