Vegan Cocoa and Walnut Rolls aka Wasp Nest

Facebooktwitterpinterest

Do you know cinnamon rolls? Do you love them? Then I am sure you will love these delicious and rich vegan cocoa and walnut rolls!

I made these yummy rolls when I was in Hungary this summer with my family – I live in England by the way.

I loved these buns as a child, we called these “wasp nest” because they look similar. My father knew how to make these, and we were asking for it a lot because they are so good!

But unfortunately, they are not vegan. The original recipe requires eggs, milk and butter. Yet, this is not a problem for me! I decided to veganize this recipe, and it turned out quite good. 🙂

So I made this recipe:

  • dairy-free,
  • egg-free,
  • easy and delicious,
  • irresistible

I include a step-by-step guide on how to make vegan cocoa and walnut rolls, you just have to follow these instructions and you will have a really nice dessert or breakfast.

What will you need for the dough?
  • 400 g flour (I used white flour this time, this works the best with this recipe)
  • 2 tbsp of ground chia seeds + 6 tbsp of water (I used this instead of eggs)
  • 20 g fresh yeast
  • 40 g vegan butter/margarine
  • 40 g sugar
  • 2,5 dl lukewarm almond milk
For the filling:
  • 140 g sugar
  • 100 g vegan butter or margarine
  • 150-200 g chopped walnuts
  • 50 g cocoa powder
Let’s get started!
1. The first step is to make the dough.

For this put the fresh yeast in the lukewarm almond (or another plant) milk, and wait until it gets a little bit fluffy. After this mix the dough ingredients in a large bowl. Knead well with your hands.

Put the dough aside for 45 minutes on room temperature.

2. Make the filling, mix all ingredients in a smaller bowl.
3. Then roll out the dough to a thin rectangle shape, and spread with the filling.
4. Roll it up as you see on the picture.
5. Grease a baking sheet or a glass sheet with some vegan butter, and cut the roll into 2-3 cm pieces.
